Brugge, Belgium

We checked into our hotel in Brugge and although the outside seemed fairly old, the inside was quite nice. Everywhere we go over here, people open doors and windows and there are no screens. I guess they don't have to worry about flies and mosquitoes. So instead of going into our hotel rooms and adjusting the AC, we just open the windows and leave them open all day and all night. We had time to walk the city streets and take in the rich history of this old, medieval town. It's hard to believe these places we only hear about actually exist and people live here and work here. The streets are made of cobblestones, the buildings have stucco and timber facades with mullioned window panes in various colors. Horse drawn carriages clopped down the streets... but cars were there too so the town had modernized somewhat. After an enjoyable, relaxing afternoon and evening in Brugge, we headed back to the hotel for the night.

The next morning we headed down to breakfast and we have come to learn everyone over here likes open faced sandwiches and yogurt and fruit and granola. We are starting to like it. The coffee in Germany and Belgium is not near as strong as in Sweden. After breakfast we once again headed out into the town. Naemi and I decided to walk the 366 steps up to the top of the old tower and were able to see the city from a birds eye view.

If anyone wants to visit a quiet, old town in Europe, I would highly recommend Brugge!

We shopped some, and purchased Belgian lace and more chocolate, then checked out of the hotel. Today, we were heading to Paris, which was only three hours away...
